Congo was a war-torn country during the 1990s, and there are occasional outbreaks of violence even now. The country is calmer in the last five years or so than it has been previously, but potential visitors should be up-to-date on the situation before they go there. With a coastline on the shores of the South Atlantic, the nation stretches roughly north-east along the Congo River, which divides it from its neighbour to the north-east, the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive here; subsequently, the country came under the rule of France. It was a centre for the slave trade. The official language is French, and the faiths of Christianity and Animism divide the population roughly between them. |
